Before the current Immigration Regulation took effect in May 2025, Spanish law did not provide a specific residence permit for family members of Spanish citizens. Previously, two options were commonly used: a residence permit for family members of EU citizens residing in Spain, or residence based on family roots. The new regulation has now formally introduced a dedicated residence permit into Spanish immigration law.
Family reunification with a Spanish citizen allows foreigners who have obtained Spanish citizenship to bring their close relatives to Spain.
Obtaining a residence permit through reunification with a Spanish citizen is generally faster and simpler than family reunification between foreign nationals who already hold residence permits.
Below, we explain everything you need to know: what family reunification entails, the requirements, and the necessary documentation.
What Is Family Reunification with a Spanish Citizen?
Family reunification is a procedure that enables a foreigner who has acquired Spanish citizenship to bring close family members to Spain and grant them residence permits along with work authorization. Technically, this permit is more accurately described as a residence permit for a family member of a Spanish citizen rather than traditional family reunification.
The following family members are eligible for reunification based on Spanish citizenship:
- Spouses and minor children. Spouses may qualify based on marriage, pareja de hecho (registered partnership), or a common-law relationship, provided there has been at least one year of cohabitation or the couple has children together.
- Adult children up to age 26 without needing to prove financial dependency.
- Adult children over age 26 with proof of financial dependency.
- Parents under age 80 with proof of financial dependency.
- Parents over age 80 without needing to prove financial dependency.
Further details on these conditions are outlined in the requirements section below.
Legal Framework Governing Family Reunification in Spain
This process is regulated by Law No. 4/2000, as updated by Royal Decree No. 1155/2024, dated 19 November 2024.
How to Apply for Family Reunification with a Spanish Citizen
The updated Immigration Regulation clearly specifies where and how to submit applications for residence permits for family members of Spanish citizens.
- Spouses and minor children may apply directly from within Spain.
- Adult children and parents must apply through Spanish Consular Offices in their country of residence.
Can You Work in Spain with a Residence Permit for a Family Member of a Spanish Citizen?
