October 6, 2025 — The city of Torrevieja has been awarded €8,562,418 from the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) under the Planes de Actuación Integrados scheme for local authorities. This funding decision was made by the Directorate for European Funds Management at Spain’s Ministry of Finance.
Torrevieja is one of only three municipalities in the Valencian Community—alongside Valencia and Castellón de la Plana—to receive the maximum allocation. Out of 42 municipalities in the region, just 15 were granted support.
Key Investment Areas
The funds will be dedicated to executing the Integrated Action Plan (PAI), which focuses on the regeneration of the southern city centre, particularly in the Acequión and San Roque districts. The plan includes:
- Revamping the Eras de la Sal area — upgrading the Sea and Salt Museum, creating a new Salt Promenade, and integrating technologies to enhance ecological sustainability and tourism appeal.
- Revitalising the San Roque centre — transforming it into a contemporary sociocultural hub to foster community engagement and support local associations.
- Renaturalising schoolyards at CEIP Acequión and Inmaculada — implementing landscaping improvements and involving the community in the renewal process.
Green Corridors and Urban Landscaping
All project sites will be connected by a new green corridor and bicycle paths extending from the CV-95 road to Doña Sinforosa Park and the Eras de la Sal area. This initiative aims to link cultural and educational centres with recreational spaces, creating a safe, attractive environment for both residents and visitors.
Project Governance
The project is coordinated by the European Funds Department of Torrevieja’s City Hall, working alongside municipal departments responsible for urban development, tourism, education, culture, innovation, ecology, and social policy. Established in June 2024 to attract and manage European funds, this department now oversees the implementation of the Integrated Action Plan.
Citywide Impact
The FEDER 2021–2027 programme prioritizes the development of sustainable, ecological, and digitally advanced cities. For Torrevieja, this grant represents the most significant urban investment in recent years. The project is expected to diversify the local economy, improve urban living standards, and enhance the city’s attractiveness to tourists.
