Torrevieja is entering the final phase of one of the most ambitious urban planning and tourism projects in its recent history: the comprehensive transformation of the port area and the construction of the new Paseo del Mar leisure centre. This strategic initiative involves a total investment exceeding 100 million euros, with approximately 61 million euros coming from private investors and around 40 million euros allocated by the city council for urban modernization and public space restoration.
Transforming the Port Area
The redevelopment will completely revitalize the port area by introducing new pedestrian promenades, green spaces, cultural venues, and leisure zones, significantly enhancing the connection between the city and the sea. A standout feature is the restoration of the historic Mínguez pier, currently undergoing extensive work to restore its original appearance and convert it into a vibrant urban and tourist destination.
The project includes a partially submerged platform designed to echo the pier’s historic layout, alongside a large illuminated decorative fountain featuring over 70 water jets with dynamic visual effects. Additionally, a museum and educational space employing digital technologies will be established to showcase the history of Torrevieja’s port and fishing industry.
New Public Spaces and Landscaping
Among the new public amenities, a spacious square exceeding 4,600 square meters will be developed in the Customs Post area, incorporating materials that reflect Torrevieja’s salt-making heritage. Adjacent to the fishing quay, a 170-metre pedestrian promenade will be created, complete with children’s playgrounds and leisure areas designed for residents’ enjoyment.
The redevelopment will add over 2,200 square meters of landscaped areas, planting more than 200 trees and 3,000 shrubs, and enhancing the tree cover along Paseo de la Libertad.
The new promenade will feature a striking central fountain with 43 compact jets illuminated by multicoloured LED technology. The main water jet will reach a height of five metres, establishing the fountain as a key visual landmark within the urban space.
Exhibition Area and Project Timeline
A significant component of the project is the reconstruction of approximately 18,900 square meters to create a new exhibition area and multifunctional esplanade. This space will host concerts, cultural events, and various activities year-round. An elevated structure will also connect the port with the Levante promenade, serving as a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
The redevelopment prioritizes pedestrians by reducing vehicle traffic along the port promenade, creating more accessible and comfortable spaces for both residents and visitors. Partial public access to the new area is anticipated this summer, with full connectivity to Paseo Juan Aparicio expected by year-end.
The Paseo del Mar leisure centre is scheduled to open between late May and early June. This complex will feature 27 commercial premises, restaurants, family entertainment options, state-of-the-art cinemas, over 4,000 square meters of green areas, and expansive pedestrian and communal zones.
